Stevens is named for an illustrious family who perpetuate a custom in American engineering, dating back to the near the beginning days of the trade Revolution. John Stevens, a colonel in the radical War, purchased from the State of New Jersey in 1784 the ground incorporated in the present day 55 acre campus of the college.
Stevens Institute of Technology is the fourth oldest technical college in the United States, and has shaped leading engineers, scientists and directors in business and administration.
