In order to practice as a nurse in U.S. you must pass the NCLEX exam that is National Council Licensure Examination and obtain a license from the state. There are two types of exam. One is for Registered Nurse and is called NCLEX-RN; the other one is for Practical Nurse and is called NCLEX-PN. Both exams have the same criteria.

How the Exam conducted?

The exams of NCLEX for both RN and PN are conducted by the use of computer. The system for the exams is called Computerized Adaptive Testing or CAT; this is basically an interactive system that is the next question is triggered by how you answer the previous one. If you have given the wrong answer than the next question will be easier one, and if you have given the right answer then next question will be difficult one. Candidate appearing in the exams must answer all questions. If a candidate did not know the answer of a particular question, than he/she has to guess and select one from the multiple choices of answers given. The computer evaluates a candidate and declares him fail or pass.

There is a slight difference in the NCLEX examination for PN and RN. The test for RN takes about six hours and a candidate has to answer at least 75 out of 265 questions. Whereas in the exam for PN, a candidate has to answer in five hours at least 85 out of 205 questions.

How to prepare for the exam?

There are number of schools that offer a specialized tutorial for NCLEX exam. Mostly this is on-line. There are many books available which help you to prepare for the NCLEX exam. Most important thing is not to panic during the exam.

What are the admission procedures?

The procedure for appearing in to NCLEX exam is very simple. You have to first apply in to the state board of nursing for authorization. The boards will than issue a latter called Authorization to Test, after that you have to pay $200 towards the fee for the NCLEX exam.
