There are two types of dental degrees. One is known as Doctor of Dental Surgery or DDS and other is Doctor of Dental Medicine or DDM. There are many Schools and colleges that offer dental degree programs. Getting admission in to the prestigious Dental School is very tough. The minimum education qualification requirement is different in different institutions but in general you should pass your high school examination with science with at least B (3.0) or above. After that you should enter in to the reputed science college and study for 4 years and earn your Bachelor degree with first class. Some of the dental schools offer their dental degree program to the students who fulfill their requirements even after 2 years or three years of college Bachelor degree program. Every one entering in to the dental school must pass the DAT test. Dental Admission Test is most important computerized test, and higher you score in it higher your chances for admission in to the reputed dental school.

After you have cleared the DAT and Bachelor degree in science you are ready to apply for admission in to the dental schools. American Association of Dental Schools Application Service abbreviated as AADSAS, is the agency specially formed to assist the student to fill up forms etc. The duration of Dental degree program is 4 years including internship.

What they teach you?

There may be slight difference in the curriculum for Dental degree program with different dental schools. But in general in the first year they focus more on theory than practical. Basic of biochemistry, anatomy and microanatomy of teeth, denture science, are some of the topics they teach you in first year. In practical you have to create the cavities by drilling in to artificial tooth usually made of plastic materials and other similar practical. As you progress in to second, third and fourth year of dental degree program you will learn the complete dentistry.

After successfully completing the Dental Degree program you will be awarded with DDM degree. Now you can apply for the license for practice. For this, you have to clear the Clinical board exams, which takes around two days.

It is generally observed that average dental degree holder with around 5 years of experience will earn approximately $1,42,000 per year.
